Barcelona coordinating with sponsors to finance Messi’s return
After Spanish journalist Gerard Romero’s revelation that the Blaugrana are coordinating with significant sponsors to ensure the transfer occurs this summer, rumours are widespread that superstar Lionel Messi, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), may be returning to Barcelona.
The Argentine star’s two-year contract at PSG expires at the end of the season and he is reportedly considering a move away from PSG. The disclosure came after he allegedly refused to cut his existing weekly earnings by more than $788,000. Messi was recently booed and whistled by Paris Saint-Germain fans in addition to being paid off due to PSG’s poor domestic record and early exit in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 against Bayern Munich.

Gerard Romero claims that Barcelona is coordinating with major sponsors to get Messi back to Spain without breaking any Financial Fair Play rules (via Carpetas Blaugranas). As he tweeted: “FC Barcelona are working with important sponsors to finance the return of Lionel Messi.”
They lost their opening two home games and while they are now top of Ligue 1 on 66 points, the title race is tight again with Lens and Marseille just six points adrift.
Romero noted that all parties are feeling more optimistic about the move’s success. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner would have to accept a lower pay, but he would be qualified to receive a portion of any commercial gains made as a result of his comeback.
Barcelona would get encouragement from the PSG star’s return. The 2022 FIFA World Cup champion played at the Nou Camp for 17 seasons and racked up 672 goals in just 778 matches. Also, he amassed every prize imaginable, including four Champions League medals and 10 La Liga championships.
