As Argentina beat France in a thrilling 2022 FIFA World Cup final at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium on Sunday, Lionel Messi finally scored on his fifth and final attempt (December 18). In the process, he achieved his elusive dream of winning the championship. In the twists and turns of the penalty shootout, the Messi-led side won the header shootout.

Messi and Angel Di Maria scored in the first half as Argentina made it 2-0 in the 80th minute. However, Kylian Mbappe’s brace in 97 seconds changed the outcome of the game. In stoppage time, Messi again helped Argentina take the lead, Mbappe scored a hat-trick and the game went into a penalty shootout.

After the game, the Argentine players officially lifted the trophy in front of the world for the first time in 36 years. Celebrity chef Salt Bae was spotted stalking Argentina players on the pitch for a photo, while holding the elusive trophy in his hands, angering fans even as the festivities looked fun.

Messi took a selfie with Yan Bei which was widely shared on social media but he was clearly not happy with what happened next.

Messi announced ahead of the summit that this will be the last match in the illustrious competition as he does not plan to play in the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted by United States- United, Canada and Mexico. However, Messi said after the win that he will continue to represent Argentina and hopes to continue playing as world champions while wearing the Argentina shirt.
