Taylor Twellman, a former member of the USMNT, slammed on Twitter (X) those who criticised the MLS after Lionel Messi’s accomplishments for Inter Miami.
Inter Miami, with only 18 points, are now last in the MLS Eastern Conference rankings. They had no chance of winning the Leagues Cup, according to many.
#Messi𓃵 did this 8x with Barcelona (6 straight games to start a campaign with a goal) and nobody asked if it was “good or bad” for La Liga or Barcelona. He scored 7 goals in a World Cup against the best in the world (🇫🇷) there was no line of demarcation.

But the club’s direction was radically changed by Lionel Messi’s arrival on July 15. With nine goals and one assist in six matches, the 2022 FIFA World Cup champion lit up the competition. Herons had an incredible run to the Leagues Cup final thanks to his accomplishments.
On August 15, Messi added another goal as Inter Miami defeated Philadelphia Union 4-1 to advance to the final versus Nashville on August 19 at Geodis Park.
While the Argentine’s outstanding run has left many fans impressed, some have criticised the MLS, even raising concerns about the quality of defending in the league.
Yesterday (16th August), a supporter tweeted the following: “Seen so many people commenting on Messi. His goal record is great for @MLS ….It’s bad for @MLS …….Messi is still the greatest…no he is isn’t @MLS is just bad. Blah Blah Blah…….. Either way this is what a healthy sports culture is about. differing opinions but key is.”
In response to this tweet, Twellman defended the MLS (via GOAL): “#Messi did this 8x with Barcelona (6 straight games to start a campaign with a goal) and nobody asked if it was “good or bad” for La Liga or Barcelona. He scored 7 goals in a World Cup against the best in the world, there was no line of demarcation. Just enjoy it! #MLS”
It’s interesting to note that Lionel Messi set a La Liga record in 2012–13 by scoring 33 goals in 21 consecutive games.

Between 2004 and 2021, Messi worked as a professional for Barcelona, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats. In 778 appearances, the 36-year-old had the most Blaugrana goals and assists ever scored (672 goals and 303 assists).
The legendary Argentinean won 35 significant titles for the team as well, including two historic trebles. In addition, he set a record in Europe by scoring 91 goals in the entire year of 2012. Due to the Blaugrana’s financial difficulties, Lionel Messi eventually signed with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2021. While he had some success there, it paled in comparison to the heights he attained with Barcelona.
